Shroom and Gloom Demo and Wishlist
Steam app 3602770, itch.io, 26 tunnels, and the full-game wishlist.
The playable Shroom and Gloom right now is the free demo. The full game is not released. Steam Early Access is scheduled for 10 September 2026. If someone is selling you a “1.0 download,” they are wrong. Install the demo, wishlist the paid app, and come back to this wiki’s getting started guide after the prologue.
Steam demo (app 3602770)
- Open the Shroom and Gloom Demo page, or search Steam for the title and pick the demo.
- Confirm you have about 9 GB free (demo listing) even though the full game lists 8 GB. Details on system requirements.
- Install through Steam on Windows or macOS.
- Launch once to let shaders/first-run setup finish before you judge hitching.
- Play as Paperboy. Other classes are Early Access, not a hidden demo cheat.
The demo launched 14 May 2025 and has been patched through 2025 and mutated again for the June 2026 festival season (PC Gaming Show / Next Fest). If you last touched it in 2025, update before you write it off — exploration was rebuilt.
itch.io demo
Team Lazerbeam also hosts the project at teamlazerbeam.itch.io/shroom-and-gloom. itch.io builds have been the long-running prototype/demo channel (Windows and OSX zips). Use itch if you want a standalone copy, if Steam is awkward in your region, or if you follow their dev logs there. Steam remains the version most reviewers and the 100k-download milestone refer to.
You can keep both. They are still demos, not the September paid build.
Wishlist the full game (app 3271280)
Wishlist Shroom and Gloom even if the demo is already in your library. The wishlist is a different app ID. Team Lazerbeam has treated wishlist milestones as real news (80k in August 2025, 100k later, 200k+ / 206,233 in the June 2026 log). A demo install does not automatically wishlist 3271280.
Wishlisting does not cost money and is the only pre-order-style signal the team has asked for. There is no founder’s pack listed on this page because Steam is still in the coming-soon / Early Access FAQ state.
What the demo contains
Official demo text:
- Two distinct decks (combat + explore).
- 26 handcrafted tunnels.
- Spore-swarming enemies and biome bosses.
- Hidden Foresight rewards (eight, per the gameplay overview).
- Combos across three playstyles (grow, eat, mood — see the build tier list).
- Strange rewards in The Gloom, including a mushroom-key door and a later ending event added in 2026.
The June 2026 mutation added a prologue, overhauled explore verbs (reveal, search, break, unlock, ignite, feed, fix, camp torches), stronger enemies as you go deeper, a better map, expanded shops, a roundup screen, and teases of character select plus a second pathway (The Facility).
You will not play Lunchlady, Concerned Parent, Janitor, or Activist here except as unlock teases. You will not get the full two-path EA roster. You will learn Distant Shadow, Toasty, Seasoned, the practice dummy, the frog statue, and whether first-person tunnels agree with your stomach.
What the demo is for
Use it as a test of three things: performance, motion comfort, and whether you like eating instead of blocking. If all three pass, wishlist 3271280. If the camera makes you ill, believe that now — Early Access is still first-person. If the two-deck loop clicks, read the demo walkthrough instead of restarting blind.
Do not treat a demo clear as “I finished Shroom and Gloom.” Team Lazerbeam has been explicit that the dream version has hundreds of cards, deep meta-progression, and scores of unique enemies across a denser cave network. The 26 tunnels are a slice.
Reviews and download counts (context, not a score)
The Steam demo has sat at Overwhelmingly Positive for long stretches (Team Lazerbeam called out 97% around the 500-review mark in October 2025; later snapshots still show ~96% on 1,000-plus reviews). The July 2026 log celebrated 100k Steam demo downloads. Combined Steam + itch.io downloads were cited around 200k in the Early Access diary. Those numbers explain why a free demo still gets festival slots. They are not a promise the September build is finished.
After you install
- Skim controls and how to play.
- Play two runs before you rewrite your deck planner notes.
- Hunt Foresight rooms; there are only eight hides.
- When you hit the Gloom door, decide whether to wishlist (you should) and whether to join Discord.
- Come back on 10 September 2026 for the paid Early Access build — two paths, five characters, still in development.
If Steam fails to show the demo, make sure you opened 3602770 not only the coming-soon full game page. If itch.io is behind Steam, prefer Steam for the 2026 mutation. If both work, play Steam and keep itch as a backup zip. That is the whole install guide: two stores, one unreleased game, and a wishlist button that actually matters to the people making it.
