Shroom and Gloom Demo Updates
From the May 2025 Steam drop to the 2026 Next Fest mutation.
The Shroom and Gloom demo is a live product with its own patch history. It is not a one-off trailer download. Steam app 3602770 launched 14 May 2025. It picked up Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, a 2025 content season, and a June 2026 mutation timed for the PC Gaming Show and Steam Next Fest. Install steps live on demo and wishlist. This page is what changed, and why a 2025 memory of the demo is out of date.
The full game is still unreleased. Early Access is 10 September 2026. Demo patches do not make that date a 1.0.
14 May 2025: Steam demo launch
Devolver and Team Lazerbeam put the first-person double-deckbuilder on Steam with a free demo the same week as the wider announcement coverage. The pitch that stuck: 26 handcrafted tunnels, two decks, eat the enemies, hunt Foresight. Paperboy is the playable class. Eight Foresight hides sit in those tunnels. Reviewers (NAG, Inverse, GamingOnLinux, PC Gamer later) treated it as a real run, not a three-room kiosk.
If you only played the earlier itch.io prototype, this Steam drop was already a different creature: longer route, biome bosses, Gloom-door fantasy, and a proper Steam news channel.
Summer–autumn 2025: 0.4.x and Overwhelmingly Positive
Team Lazerbeam shipped stacked demo updates through mid-2025 (0.4.71 in July, 0.4.77 visual/card-handling overhaul in August). Patch notes from that era are the source for bugs this wiki still cites, including Spring into Action drawing only Fly Kicks, MegaShroom evolution issues, Gloom bleed when the door opened, and rage-limit tweaks.
October 2025: the demo crossed the review threshold for Overwhelmingly Positive (Team Lazerbeam publicly cited 525 reviews at 97% at that milestone). Later store snapshots still sit around 96% on 1,000-plus reviews. That rating is for the demo, not for Early Access. Do not quote it as a 1.0 Metacritic.
August 2025 log extras: 80k wishlists, the 0.4.77 drop, and NorthernLion playing the demo — covered as a news beat on news and dev logs, not as a patch.
June 2026: the mutation (PC Gaming Show + Next Fest)
7 June 2026 (PC Gaming Show window): Team Lazerbeam announced Early Access in Q3 2026, dropped a new trailer, and shipped the first major demo update since August 2025. They described it as an exploration rebuild, not a texture pack.
Public highlight list from that drop:
- Explore verbs overhauled: light torches to camp, feed creatures, reveal / break / fix / unlock, and a warning not to overstay or The Gloom takes you.
- Brand-new prologue to teach those verbs.
- New music and audio.
- Enemies that hit harder the deeper you go.
- Expanded shops.
- Improved map.
- Updated roundup screen.
- New ending event if you reach The Gloom.
- Teases of character select and a second pathway.
16 June 2026: the demo hits Steam Next Fest. Same week they celebrated 200k wishlists (206,233 in the log) and announced that the codebase could support localization, with Simplified Chinese named first. Festival timing is why a lot of 2026 coverage talks about a “new demo” even though 3602770 is the same app ID.
If your muscle memory is 2025 bash-and-dig only, play the prologue again. Feed and camp are now part of the language, and room danger is part of the cost.
July 2026: 100k downloads and Demo Days
The 31 July 2026 log is the download milestone: 100k Steam demo downloads. They also noted a Six One Indie Demo Days slot and recapped June’s chaos (EA announcement, trailer, demo update, showcase, Next Fest, 200k wishlists). Combined Steam + itch.io download figures around 200k later appeared in the Early Access diary. Different denominators — do not smash them into one fake chart.
This is also the moment to stop calling the demo “obscure.” It is the main way people have played Shroom and Gloom for more than a year.
What still is not in the demo
- Full Lunchlady / Concerned Parent / Janitor / Activist play.
- The Facility as a complete second path (Playtopia showed a slice; EA is the real ship).
- The 1.0 card count. Steam EA copy says ~300 cards per pathway in the paid build.
- A Verified Steam Deck badge (still Unknown).
The demo’s job after June 2026 is to teach the mutated explore loop and to keep Foresight hunting intact, not to spoiler The Facility’s entire pool.
How to update an old install
Steam: let the client update 3602770. If a branch is stuck, verify files. itch.io: download the current zip; old 0.4.x folders will not magically gain the prologue.
Then run one fresh Paperboy start. Check that you see prologue teaching, camp torches, and the newer roundup. If you do not, you are on a stale build and every tier list comment you make will be about a dead patch.
After 10 September
Early Access will not erase this article. The demo remains the historical on-ramp and may stay downloadable as a separate app. When 3271280 ships, compare: did explore verbs survive, did the prologue stay, did the Gloom ending get replaced by two full paths? Until that diff exists, the last major public demo beat is the 2026 festival mutation plus 100k Steam downloads and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating.
Play it, update it, and do not review September’s paid build with May 2025 memories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Shroom and Gloom questions.
When did the Steam demo launch?
14 May 2025 as app 3602770. An itch.io prototype existed earlier.
What was the June 2026 demo update?
A full explore overhaul plus a prologue, harder depths, shop/map/roundup work, a new Gloom ending, and teases of extra characters and paths. It landed with the PC Gaming Show / Next Fest window.
How many people downloaded the demo?
Team Lazerbeam's July 2026 log says 100k Steam downloads. The Early Access diary cites more than 200k across Steam and itch.io.
Is the demo still Overwhelmingly Positive?
It reached that status by October 2025 and has remained in the mid-90s percent positive on a four-digit review count in later snapshots. Always check Steam for the live number.
Do I need to reinstall for Next Fest changes?
If Steam already owns 3602770, an update is enough. itch.io users should grab the latest zip.
Will the demo close when Early Access launches?
Not announced. Treat 3602770 and 3271280 as separate apps until Team Lazerbeam says otherwise.
