Shroom and Gloom Demo Walkthrough
Twenty-six tunnels, eight Foresights, Paperboy only, and a locked Lunchlady teaser at the end.
The Shroom and Gloom demo is the real product you can play today. Team Lazerbeam and Devolver Digital put a first-person double-deckbuilder on Steam with Overwhelmingly Positive reception around 96 percent, well past 100,000 demo downloads, and a wishlist count that has sat above 200,000. Early Access is still scheduled for 10 September 2026. This walkthrough is how to spend a demo run without inventing a fake map of every sprite.
You will play Paperboy. You will walk 26 handcrafted tunnels. You will hunt 8 Foresight rewards. You will fight spore packs and biome bosses. You will want a mushroom key for the Gloom door. Lunchlady may appear as a locked teaser if you finish. They are not playable in the demo. If that is already too many nouns, start with Getting Started and How to Play.
What the demo contains
The Steam page is blunt. Build two decks, battle through 26 handcrafted tunnels, and face spore-swarming enemies and biome bosses. Discover Foresight cards that shape later runs. Unlock combos across playstyles. The dream version of the game is hundreds of cards and deep meta-progression; the demo is a dense slice of caves, not the full two-path Early Access build.
English is the interface language. Windows and macOS are the platforms. The engine is Unity. Confirm system requirements if the first-person view stutters, and skim controls if the hand plus mouse look feels awkward. Install pointers live on the demo hub. Patch notes and demo updates live under demo notes.
You will not play Concerned Parent, Lunchlady, Janitor, or Activist here. You will not walk The Facility as a full path. You will still see hints of human work: wooden doors, carved plinths, the idea that someone built this underworld. The Facility’s metal tunnels are the later argument.
Tunnel types and the Foresight hunt
Tunnels are handcrafted, not an infinite seed. Names you will see include Mossy, Thorny, Trippy, and other biome labels that change which dig spots pay. Dig when the prompt says the dirt is unique. That is how tunnel-specific cards enter the explore deck. The Explore Deck Guide is the tool manual: locks, dummy, frog statue, rest, warmth.
Foresight chests are the meta. Eight rewards hide across the 26 tunnels. Foresight cards are always-on passives, relic-like. Examples players actually see include extra attack draw at the start of combat, an edible at the start of exploration, or a once-per-death heal. Do not memorize a fake list of eight names this wiki cannot source. Pick the passive that matches the kitchen you are building. Rankings live on the Foresight tier list and the build list.
Forks will advertise Foresight on more than one path. You cannot grab all eight in a casual first clear unless you already know the layout. That is fine. A successful run lets you lock one Foresight you discovered for future explorers. Dying with four unchosen chests is still progress in your head; it is not progress in the meta slot.
Paperboy route
Paperboy is the demo starter: warmth, campfire, Fireballs you can feed for 2 Headpoints and Burning Sensation, and a habit of taking one extra explore turn. Use it. Heat the camp. Rest when the room is ticking up danger. Headbutt locks only while Headpoints are rich. Take the practice dummy when a fight offers it. Visit the frog statue when a starter is dead weight.
Combat stays on roast, stab, and whatever growth you earned. Distant Shadow costs 3 energy and applies spell weakness; it is a luxury opener, not a requirement for tunnel one. Cook fatal roasts into Toasty. Bank food for biome bosses. The Combat Deck Guide and How to Eat Enemies are the fight manuals. This walkthrough only insists you do not skip dummy rooms to save ten seconds.
When a biome boss appears, you should already have max Headpoints above the starter line and a bag that is not empty. How to Beat Bosses is the exam sheet. If you are reading it during the fight, you are late, but it is still better than looking for a block card that does not exist.
Lunchlady mention and the locked roster
Finish a run and the demo may show Lunchlady as a new character: dish up feasts while exploring, use an apron to catch card-growing spores in combat, lunch is served. The portrait is a teaser. Lunchlady stays locked in the demo. Concerned Parent, Janitor, and Activist are likewise not the body you are walking. The Characters Guide keeps the roster honest so this walkthrough does not pretend you unlocked a kitchen class.
The Facility may appear as a path label or a future-route screen. It is not the 26-tunnel cavern you just cleared. Digital locks, gunk, machines, and data belong to that later path. Do not backtrack the demo looking for a janitor closet that is scheduled for Early Access.
Ending at The Gloom
The mushroom key unlocks the Gloom door. Keep it. Ordinary keys and Headpoints bashes are for ordinary locks. When the door finally looks like a destination instead of a side room, pay the key, keep Headpoints for the last swings, and cook whatever is still moving.
A successful screen will throw numbers at you: enemies murdered, cards collected, food remaining. Then it will ask you to choose a Foresight for future explorers. Pick the passive you actually used. Unstoppable-style combat draw and snack-on-explore lines are both defensible. The pretty art is not a criterion.
If you die before the door, the demo will still thank you. Future travelers are the joke and the meta. Run it again. The tunnels are handcrafted, so knowledge sticks. Use the deck planner if you want to remember which dummy upgrades you liked. Use demo notes if a build mutated since your last evening.
The demo is not a paid launch. It is a dense, Overwhelmingly Positive slice of a game that is still heading toward 10 September 2026. Clear the 26 tunnels when you can, lock one Foresight, stare at the locked Lunchlady, and then decide whether Paperboy’s extra turn was courage or a warmth problem you finally solved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Shroom and Gloom questions.
How many tunnels and Foresights are in the demo?
26 handcrafted tunnels and 8 hidden Foresight rewards. Beating the demo lets you keep one Foresight you found. Compare picks on the Foresight tier list.
Can I play Lunchlady in the demo?
No. A clear can tease Lunchlady, but they stay locked. Paperboy is the demo starter. See the Characters Guide.
Where is the mushroom key used?
On the Gloom door at the end of the demo route. Do not spend it on a wooden chest. How to Beat Bosses repeats that warning.
Is The Facility inside the current demo route?
The 26 cavern tunnels are the demo you play. The Facility is a second path with a unique card pool, scheduled to matter in Early Access. Tools for locks you do have are on the Explore Deck Guide.
Where do I install the demo and check specs?
Use the demo hub and system requirements. Bindings and first-person notes are on controls.
