Shroom and Gloom System Requirements
Steam min/rec tables, Unity notes, and why first-person may spin your stomach.
Shroom and Gloom is a Unity first-person game built from stacked hand-drawn 2D layers inside 3D tunnels. That art pipeline looks heavier than a typical sprite deckbuilder, which is why people ask whether a 2012 laptop can run it. Official Steam tables are modest. The honest extra warnings are motion sickness, an unknown Steam Deck compatibility badge, and a storage listing that disagrees with itself between the full game and the demo.
The full game is not released. These specs are what Steam shows for the upcoming 10 September 2026 Early Access build and the live demo. Platforms: Windows and macOS on Steam. Single-player only. No console SKU has been announced.
If you still need to install, use demo and wishlist. If you already run it and feel ill, skip to the motion-sickness section before you blame your GPU.
Windows (official Steam)
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 (see Steam client note) | Windows 10 |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-760 (4 x 2800) or AMD Athlon II X4 645 AM3 (4 x 3100) | Intel Core i5-3470 (4 x 3200) or AMD FX-4350 (4 x 4200) |
| RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB |
| GPU | GeForce GTX 550 Ti (3072 MB) or Radeon HD 6850 (1024 MB) | GeForce GTX 1050 2 GB or Radeon RX 460 4 GB |
| Storage | 8 GB | 8 GB |
Steam’s own footnote: starting 1 January 2024 the Steam client only supports Windows 10 and later. The game listing still prints Windows 7 as a minimum, but you cannot realistically run a modern Steam install on 7. Treat Windows 10 64-bit as the practical floor.
macOS (official Steam)
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Mac OS X 10.13 or later | Mac OS X 10.13 or later |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-5350U (2 x 1800) or equivalent, or Intel Core i5-2400S (4 x 2500) or equivalent | Intel Core i5-6500 (4 x 3200) or equivalent |
| RAM | 8 GB | 8 GB |
| GPU | Intel HD Graphics 6000 or equivalent; Radeon HD 6750M (512 MB) or equivalent | AMD Radeon R9 M390 (2048 MB) equivalent |
| Storage | 8 GB | 8 GB |
Note the RAM jump: macOS minimum is 8 GB, not 4 GB. Apple Silicon is not named on the Steam table. itch.io currently ships Intel-era OSX zips for the demo; if you are on Apple Silicon, expect translation and verify performance yourself rather than trusting a silent “it should work.”
Storage: 8 GB versus about 9 GB
The full-game Steam page lists 8 GB available space on both Windows and macOS. The demo page lists 9 GB on Windows in some snapshots. Keep at least 9 GB free so either download can finish, plus a little extra for Steam redistributables. This is a card game, not a 100 GB shooter, but a failed demo update is a miserable way to learn you were 400 MB short.
Unity, layers, and why it still looks expensive
Team Lazerbeam has shown Unity scene views of tunnels built from thousands of stacked hand-drawn elements, with a level-builder gradient colouring black-and-white layers in real time. That is why a GTX 550 Ti class card is listed at all: you are moving a camera through paintover geometry, not flipping 2D combat screens. Min spec should boot and crawl. Recommended spec is the one that keeps first-person motion readable while cards animate in your hand.
Close overlays, browsers, and RGB software if you are on the minimum GPU. The demo’s later rooms add more enemies and particle clutter; Steam threads from 2025 already described hitching when firefly-style sprites piled up.
Motion sickness (NAG and first-person)
NAG’s May 2025 demo first impressions loved the game and still said it made the reviewer motion-sick. Shroom and Gloom is first-person in a way most deckbuilders are not. Tunnels breathe, layers parallax, and the camera walks between card fights. If you skip first-person games for a reason, try the demo in short sessions, sit further from the screen, and drop resolution or effects before you buy Early Access sight unseen.
There is no official “comfort mode” listed on Steam as of this writing. Do not assume one will exist on 10 September. If you are sensitive, the demo is the test, not the trailer.
Steam Deck and handhelds
Steam’s Deck compatibility badge is Unknown for both the full game and the demo. That is the official line. Unofficially:
- May 2025: players said the first demo chugged on Deck in later encounters. Team Lazerbeam replied that early demo Deck issues were patched and later players reported it running nicely, with resolution drops helping.
- Later Team Lazerbeam clips showed the game holding around 60 FPS on Deck after optimization work, while still admitting control polish remains.
Unknown means Valve has not Verified it. It does not mean it refuses to launch. If you play on Deck, start on a low resolution, disable extra overlay layers, and expect to bind cards yourself. This wiki will not call it Verified until Steam does.
Linux is likewise unofficial. See the dedicated Linux and Proton notes for GamingOnLinux and Proton reports. Official support remains Windows and macOS.
What you do not need
You do not need a ray-tracing GPU. You do not need 32 GB of RAM. You do not need an SSD in the Steam table, though any 2016-era SSD will make tunnel streaming feel better than a 5400 RPM disk. You do not need a controller; mouse and keyboard are the listed extras on third-party spec mirrors, and the controls page is written around that.
Before you click purchase on 10 September
- Confirm Windows 10+ or macOS 10.13+.
- Confirm 8 GB RAM on Mac, 4 GB absolute floor on Windows (8 GB recommended).
- Free 9 GB.
- Run the demo for an hour, including later tunnels, not only the prologue.
- If the camera bothers you, stop. Early Access will still be first-person.
Specs this low are good news for old desktops and a warning for anyone who thought “hand-drawn” meant a static card table. Test the demo. Wishlist the full game. Do not buy blind on a machine that already fails the GTX 550 Ti line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Shroom and Gloom questions.
Can I run Shroom and Gloom on Windows 7?
The Steam table still lists Windows 7, but the Steam client itself requires Windows 10 or later. Use Windows 10+.
How much disk space do I need?
Steam lists 8 GB for the full game. Some demo pages list about 9 GB. Free at least 9 GB.
Is it Verified on Steam Deck?
No. The badge is Unknown. The developers have shown improved Deck performance after 2025 patches, but Valve has not Verified it.
Why do people mention motion sickness?
The game is first-person. NAG's demo review said it caused motion sickness even while praising the design. Try the demo first.
Is this a Unity game?
Yes. Team Lazerbeam has posted Unity scene views of stacked 2D tunnel layers.
Are consoles listed?
No. Official platforms are Steam Windows and macOS. Single-player only.
