Shroom and Gloom on Linux
Proton and Wine reports, no official Linux build, and a Steam Deck badge that is still Unknown.
Shroom and Gloom does not ship an official Linux build. Team Lazerbeam and Devolver Digital list Steam for Windows and macOS. Early Access is scheduled for 10 September 2026. The full game is not released. The free demo is available now, and that is the build Linux players have actually launched — through Proton or Wine, not through a native checkbox on the store.
This page is a compatibility desk, not a promise. GamingOnLinux files the game under Proton / Wine (Windows). In May 2025 Liam Dawe ran the demo on Linux with Proton 10 Beta and said it worked great. The same site later listed the September Early Access date with the same Proton / Wine platform tag. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility badge is Unknown for both the full game page and the demo. Those three sentences are the whole official-adjacent picture. Everything else is community reports.
If you still need specs for the Windows binary you are wrapping, use system requirements. If you still need to install, use the demo hub. If the camera is the problem rather than the distro, that is controls and a motion-sickness warning, not a Proton flag.
What is official, and what is not
Official platforms: Steam Windows and macOS. Single-player. English interface on Steam today. Simplified Chinese was announced as a future localization, not as a reason Linux is supported. There is no announced native Linux SKU, no SteamOS store badge, and no console SKU.
Unofficial: Proton on Steam, Wine or a Proton-based launcher outside Steam, and whatever a handheld can do with the Windows build. GamingOnLinux’s 15 May 2025 piece is the sourced success story for the demo: Proton 10 Beta, a full run, a wishlist. Their 24 August 2026 Early Access date story still tags the game Proton / Wine (Windows). That is how a Linux newsroom files a Windows game that happens to boot. It is not Team Lazerbeam signing a native port.
Do not file a bug with the studio that says “Linux is broken” if you never launched the Windows build through Steam Play. Do not tell a Windows friend that Linux is a listed platform. Do not skip system requirements because Proton felt smooth on someone else’s AMD desktop. The min/rec tables are still Intel/AMD CPUs, GeForce and Radeon GPUs, 4 GB RAM on Windows (8 GB recommended; 8 GB minimum on macOS), and about 8–9 GB of disk. Unity, stacked 2D layers in 3D tunnels, first-person motion — those costs follow the binary onto Linux.
Proton, Wine, and what people actually ran
Steam Play is the practical path. Install the demo (app 3602770) or, after 10 September, the paid app (3271280) on a Linux Steam client. Enable Steam Play for other titles if it is not already on. Force a specific compatibility tool if the default fails: Proton 10.x is the version GamingOnLinux named for the 2025 demo; newer stable Proton 10 releases exist and may be a better first try in 2026. Properties → Compatibility → “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.” If a version mis-clicks menus or drops the overlay, try another numbered Proton before you assume the game is a hard no.
Wine without Steam is a second-class option. The itch.io demo ships Windows and OSX zips. A Wine prefix can launch a zip. Steam remains the version tied to the 2026 festival mutation, 100k-download milestone, and most review coverage. Prefer Steam if the two diverge. Lutris or Heroic can wrap Proton for non-Steam copies; that is still unofficial.
Community ProtonDB-style reports on the Windows app have included Gold-ish “works” notes, Proton 9 and Proton 10 entries, and at least one SteamOS handheld report that asked for better battery use while still launching. Another report needed a resolution pass because the window did not scale and the mouse missed menu buttons until the display was fixed. Treat those as anecdotes. Counts stay small while the paid game is unreleased. This wiki will not invent a Platinum badge.
Controller and overlay issues are Linux-flavored versions of a Windows complaint. Older demo builds were called unwieldy. End turn sits far from the hand. First-person look plus a card cursor is already awkward on a trackpad. Proton will not magically bind a perfect gamepad layout. Open in-game options, then Steam Input. The controls page is written around mouse and keyboard on purpose.
Steam Deck: Unknown, not Verified
Steam’s Deck compatibility badge is Unknown. That is the official line for both store entries. Unknown means Valve has not Verified it. It does not mean the demo refuses to launch.
Unofficially, 2025 players said the first demo chugged on Deck in later encounters. Team Lazerbeam replied that early demo Deck issues were patched, and later players reported it running more nicely with resolution drops. Later studio clips showed the game holding around 60 FPS on Deck after optimization work, while still admitting control polish remains. Handheld ProtonDB-style notes exist. None of that is a Verified checkmark.
If you play on Deck, start on a low resolution, disable extra overlay layers, expect to bind cards yourself, and treat later tunnels as the real test. The June 2026 mutation added more explore verbs, camp torches, and enemies that hit harder the deeper you go. A prologue that ran fine is not a biome boss that ran fine. Heat and battery are your problem. The studio did not ship a native SteamOS build to solve them.
Motion sickness does not care which OS you wrapped. NAG’s demo first impressions loved the game and still reported a sick stomach. First-person layers parallax. Sit further from a Deck screen, drop resolution, and take breaks. Early Access will still be first-person on 10 September.
How to try it without lying to yourself
- Confirm you are willing to run a Windows Unity binary through Proton. If you only play native Linux titles, this is not your game yet.
- Free at least 9 GB. Steam lists 8 GB for the full game; some demo pages list about 9 GB.
- Install the demo on Steam. Wishlist full game 3271280 separately.
- Force Proton 10.x if the default tool fails. Note the exact version you used.
- Play past the prologue. Later tunnels and particle clutter are where 2025 hitching showed up.
- If menus miss clicks, change resolution before you file a “broken” report.
- If the camera bothers you, stop. Distro hopping will not add a comfort mode the store does not list.
After a successful boot, the game is still Shroom and Gloom: two decks, no block cards, eat and roast and season, Headpoints, warmth, Paperboy, 26 tunnels, eight Foresights. Read How to Play once the client stays up. Path plans for Early Access live on the Pathways Guide. Demo impressions live on the demo review. None of those pages can make Linux official.
Proton is a community report, not a store checkbox. Buy on 10 September only if you accept Windows and macOS as the platforms Team Lazerbeam actually listed — and treat a good Proton boot as a bonus you verified yourself, not as a port the September build is required to keep. When Valve Verifies the Deck or the studio ships a native binary, this page should change. Until then the honest line is short: no official Linux build, GamingOnLinux ran the demo on Proton 10 Beta, Steam Deck remains Unknown, and the mushrooms do not care which kernel roasted them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Shroom and Gloom questions.
Is there an official Linux version of Shroom and Gloom?
No. Steam lists Windows and macOS. Linux play is unofficial Proton or Wine. Specs for the Windows binary are on system requirements.
Did anyone actually run the demo on Linux?
Yes. GamingOnLinux ran the May 2025 demo with Proton 10 Beta and reported it worked. That is a community success, not a native port.
Is Shroom and Gloom Verified on Steam Deck?
No. The badge is Unknown. The developers have shown improved Deck performance after 2025 patches, but Valve has not Verified it.
Which Proton version should I force?
Start with a current Proton 10.x build. GamingOnLinux named Proton 10 Beta for the 2025 demo. If menus mis-click, try another numbered version before you quit.
Can I use the itch.io zip on Wine instead of Steam?
You can try. Prefer the Steam demo if the builds diverge; Steam is the 2026 festival version. Install pointers are on the demo hub.
Will Early Access add native Linux on 10 September 2026?
Nothing official has announced that. Treat September as a Windows and macOS Early Access date unless a patch note says otherwise.
